what's special about this jobs report is the survey was being taken at the same time hurricane sandy hit. transportation was blocked. power was out for a big swath of the country. factories had to stop producing. the economy particularly in the northeast was a mess. there was no way to survey it well. that, the economists say is why their expectations are so low for tomorrow. the good news is the hurricane's affects are reversing and quickly. the number of people filing new claims for unemployment benefits rocketed in the week of the hurricane. last week fell just as rapidly. we will eventually know what happened to the labor market in november. but as my "washington post" colleague neil irwin writes, probably not until december 21st or so when the state by state jobs numbers come out, that we can filter out the states hit by the hurricane and see what's going on in states where the economy was relatively normal. done. whatever the number is -- time to spare. whatever the number is tomorrow, don't freak out, don't worry about it. at least not yet. and that much freshness is gonna tak

talking about sandy, there seems to be a lack of sandy effect as some had thought initially. we see a pullback, a little less than half of a percent. we have positive indications there that says the job market is doing better, too. what's your thought here? what drove this unexpected gain in jobs, basically double what some consensus numbers were? >> i think part of it is the data in which it was collected. we had an early thanksgiving so seasonal hiring for the holidays offset the superstorm sandy. in addition, i think -- and where i would differ from jared just a little bit and we rarely do -- the underlying economy is consideri considerably stronger. if you take into account the number of baby boomers that are retiring, that has not been talked about and does effect the labor force participation rate. the broadest measure of unemployment, the unemployed and those who left the workforce fell to 14.7%. so i think things are getting better. what i'm most afraid of is the type of talk we heard from speaker boehner and maxine waters. they are taking us to the cliff on both side

why is that not considered sandy related? >> it is weird because there are two different surveys when you look at these jobs numbers. one comes from the businesses. the businesses, they take that survey, november 12th, and the businesses are for the job creation number. the other survey is called a household survey. that's how we determine the unemployment rate. and part of that household survey is did you look for a job last week, yes, no, and why not? so a lot of people said weather related. when i was digging into the numbers, i said a normal november, weather related, about 60,000, here we had 300,000, that's one of the reasons we saw the unemployment rate go down. look, i want to feel good about the unemployment rate being low, but 7.7% happened because fewer people were part of the labor force. that's not the right reason that we wanted to see the jobless rate go down. >> absolutely. and i want to read you something that paul krugman wrote in the new york times earlier this week. he said, long-term unemployment remains
